Animal Nursing Assistant - Voluntary Placement

This position requires the student to gain a place on the Level 2 Certificate in Animal Nursing Assistant course at Greenmount College, Antrim. This course will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to support qualified veterinary staff and prepare students for careers as animal nursing assistants in veterinary practices. The course is delivered at Greenmount College on a day-release basis over one academic year. 20 hours a week is spent working voluntarily in City Vets.

The course covers:
- Basic practical management and reception skills
- Companion animal anatomy and physiology
- Control and restraint of animals
- Maintenance of animal accommodation
- Principles of infection control
- The care of ill and injured animals within a veterinary practice
- The husbandry and welfare of domestic animals

Progression opportunities and career destinations
Students who successfully complete the Animal Nursing Assistant course may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (VN) course at Greenmount with City Vets.

Important Note:
Due to the limited availability of places on the VN course City Vets can not guarantee a VN placement. Students who have completed the ANA course with City Vets will be treated more favourably during the selection process for the VN course.

Entry Requirements
Normally two GCSE Grade Cs or three Grade Ds including English and Mathematics is the minimum requirement. City Vets wish all ANAs who pass the course to progress on to the VN course but the VN course is much more demanding. This is why City Vets will be expecting applicants for the ANA course to have GCSE Grade As and Bs or A-level passes. Experience working with animals is favourable so applicants are encouraged to find regular placements with animal shelters and animal charities. Applicants must be at least 16 years or over, and be prepared to work voluntarily for at least 20 hours/week in City Vets.

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

This position requires the student to gain a place on the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (VN) course at Greenmount College, Antrim. This course is designed to prepare students for careers in veterinary nursing/animal care working in veterinary practices. City Vets are an Approved Veterinary Training Practice and all TVNs will be employed in the practice when not at college.
 
Course content
Year 1 consists of 80 teaching days, delivered over two days per week, covering:
- Anaesthesia
- Anatomy and physiology
- Applied animal health and husbandry
- Diagnostic imaging
- Health and safety
- Infection control

Year 2 consists of seven taught weeks covering:

- Applied peri-operative equine/small animal nursing
- Applied nursing of sick small animals
- Developing professional veterinary nursing practice
- Emergency and critical care of small animals
- Supporting anaesthetised patients

Interested in becoming a Veterinary Surgeon?

There are eight Universities through-out the British Isles that offer degrees in Veterinary Science. They are Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Dublin, Bristol, Cambridge and Nottingham. Other Universities including the University of Ulster have expressed interests in offering Veterinary Science degrees in the future. All Universities have different entry requirements but they will all want applicants to have shown a keen interest in animals from a young age and to be an out-going interesting individual.

City Vets would encourage secondary school pupils to find regular placements with animal shelters and animal charities before they consider placements in veterinary practices. Practice placements are limited to pupils who have done well in their GCSEs and tend to involve volunteering on Saturday mornings. Currently Studying Veterinary Science

City Vets will accept students who are currently studying Veterinary Science and require Veterinary practice placements to fulfil their course requirements. From experience, students who treat these placements like a “job” gain the most benefit. Hence students will be expected to turn up on time, be proactive in their involvement during working hours and be keen to learn.
